Colonel Thomas Cutts was one of the most eminent merchants in Maine and rose to great wealth. He was born in 1736 and moved to Saco, Maine in 1758. During his lifetime he was a West India merchant, ship owner, military officer, member of the Massachusetts legislature and of the governor's council. Prior to June 22, 1768 he was known as Thomas Cutt. On that date he added "s" to his name and was generally known as Thomas Cutts thereafter. He died January 10, 1821. From the description ...

Robert Bailey Thomas (1766-1846), of Sterling and West Boylston, Mass., was the son of William and Azabah Thomas. From an early age, Thomas desired to publish an almanac, but found he lacked the needed mathematical skill. He became an apprentice book binder and soon began a career as a bookseller. This in turn renewed his interest in publishing almanacs, so Thomas attended a mathematics school in Boston. In 1793, he published his _Farmer's Almanack_. Thomas Cutts (1736-1821) was born in Kittery, Me. In 1759, he opened a general store on King's Island in Saco, Me. The name of the town changed to Pepperrellborough in 1762 and back to Saco in 1805. The store remained in business for twenty years. Cutts extended his interests to timber, mailling and ship building, and was involved in timber trade in the West Indies.
